Radium History

The hot springs in Radium were first used by Kutenai Indians who relied on the springs for medicinal and healing purposes. Later, the pools were discovered by white explorers in the 1840s. In 1914, Lord Northcote and his group of Englishmen started the construction of the first pool, but their progress was halted by the start of World War I. The Canadian government later took over and the first bathhouse opened in 1923. The bathhouse was later burned down in a fire incident and a new aquacourt, hot pool, and swimming pool were constructed.

Kootenay National Park later created a new spacious campground overlooking Radium Village to replace the original one situated above the pools. The hot springs, Radium Golf Course and other establishments led to the growth of Radium's population and positioned it to be one of the best tourist destinations in Columbia Valley.

Hot Springs

The hot springs in Radium remain the main attraction in the area bringing tourists from as far as Calgary. The pool offers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the waters while taking in the breathtaking views of the green and rocky landscape. The odourless and sulphurless mineral soaking pools feature temperatures around 39 degrees/103 Fahrenheit. You can also take a swim in the plunge pool, which offers cool waters of about 27 C/84F.

Golf

Radium features two 18-hole golf courses: Springs at Radium Golf Resort and Radium Course. They offer courses in great shape where you can enjoy a round of golf while enjoying the picturesque backdrop of the landscape and mountain peaks. Other nearby golf courses include 9-hole, Edgewater Hilltop Par 3 course, 9-hole Spur Valley Greens, 9-hole Setetkwa Golf Course. To the south, golfers can explore Eagle Ranch Golf Resort in Invermere, and Windermere Valley Golf Course in Windermere.

Fishing

There are many lakes and rivers close to Radium where you can spend your day trying to find something for dinner or partake in catch and release. Windermere Lake, situated just a few minutes south in Windermere town, offers a canoe launch perfect for taking a ride on the water to try your luck at catching rainbow trout, sockeye salmon, northern pikeminnow, bass, kokanee, bull trout and much more. The nearby Kootenay National Park also allows you to hike in to fish at Cobb Lake and Dog Lake. Other options include Kootenay and Vermillion Rivers. However, to fish in the park, you will have to purchase a National Park fishing licence at the gate.

National Parks

Radium is situated close to three national parks. Kootenay National Park spans 1,406 sq km and it offers lots to explore, from viewpoints, trails to hot springs and wildlife. You can enjoy the natural vistas while driving along Highway 93 or take hikes at beautiful spots such as Paint Pots or Marble Canyon. More adventures are available at Cobb Lake, Stanley Glacier and Floe Lake. To end the day, the hot springs in the park will help refresh you and improve your mood. The park also features campgrounds including, Redstreak Campground, McLeod Meadows, and Marble Canyon.

During winter, the park offers trails perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Banff National Park is home to several attractions such as the resort town of Banff, Cave and Basin, Bow Falls, Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake. Another park is Yoho National Park, which features more interesting trails and lakes.

Hiking & Mountaineering

Kootenay National Park features lots of easy and challenging trails. Floe Lake trails lead to glaciers, peaks and a glacier-fed lake, while Stanley Glacier Trail is an easier trail that leads to glaciers, cliffs, a regenerating forest, and also an opportunity to encounter fossils. Bugaboo Provincial Park is popular among mountain climbers as it offers challenging peaks of the Purcell Mountain Ranges, which has been drawing climbers since the late 1880s.

You can take a beautiful hike to Conrad Kain Hut, a hostel maintained by the Alpine Club of Canada. The hike to the hut may be challenging for some, so be adequately prepared. From there, hikers can head to more challenging areas such as the North Howser 'Tower' and Bugaboo Spire. Lake Magog Trail is another scenic and challenging 12 km trail in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. Along the trail, you can discover campgrounds, alpine cabin shelters, and ranger stations.

Other Attractions

Other recreational activities that you can partake in while living in Radium include picnicking, whitewater rafting, hang gliding, paragliding, taking aerial tours and a whole lot more. Either way, it’s impossible to exhaust all the fun activities in the area.
