Fairmont History

Fairmont Springs was home to the Kutenai Indians who relied on the hot springs for healing and medicinal use. White explorers like George Simpson later discovered the springs in 1841. Other explorers like David Thompson explored the famous Fairmont Indian baths. The first homestead in the area was built by George Geary in 1887.

Hot Springs

Fairmont Hot Springs is the best place to live if you're looking for year-round recreational activities. Hot springs are abundant in the area, with some located within the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and others located in a nearby waterfall and behind a historical building in the area where you can explore the famous Kutenai Baths. Temperatures in the naturally heated water ranges from 30-45 degrees creating the perfect pool for taking a soak.

Fishing

There are many fishing spots in Fairmont. These include Columbia Lake, Windermere Lake, Whiteswan Lake and Alces Lake. Whiteswan Lake and Alces Lake are both located within the Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park. They are maintained for fishing through the replenishment of about 30,000 Rainbow Trout fingerlings annually. Other types of fish you can find in these lakes include mountain whitefish, kokanee, rainbow trout, bull trout, burbot, and cutthroat trout. Columbia Lake and Windermere lake are also popular with windsurfers.

Parks

There are also numerous parks in the area good for swimming, biking, hiking and sightseeing. Columbia Lake Provincial Park is located in the northeastern end of Columbia Lake. The park offers great walking trails, breathtaking mountain and lake views, boat and canoe launches and lots of nature to explore. Thunder Hill Provincial Park is tucked in the southwestern end of Columbia Lake, and it features a campground, more trails and spectacular views of the lake and the Rocky Mountains. Also near the park is the source of the mighty Columbia River (4th largest in North America), a place you should explore if you plan to move to Fairmont. 

There are more parks in the area including, Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park, popular with campers; Kootenay National Park, located north of Fairmount and features 3 major campgrounds: Redstreak Campground, McLeod Meadows Campground and Marble Canyon Campground; and Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Park, located in Invermere and offers kilometres of hiking trails. 

Golf

Golfing is a popular sport in Fairmont during the summer months. Riverside Golf Course, Mountainside Golf Course and Creekside Golf Course offer challenging courses and natural vistas of the Columbia Valley. More golf courses are minutes away in Windermere and Invermere including, Copper Point, Eagle Ranch, and Windermere Valley. 

Resorts

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is a popular resort in Fairmont featuring natural mineral hot spring pools, ski areas, natural spring spa, poolside shops, golf shops, RV resort, day camps and much more. Another resort is Panorama Mountain Ski Resort, perfect for a mountain retreat as it's located in the Toby Creek Valley of the Purcell Mountains, 17km west of Invermere. It features high-speed chairlifts, 1,320 m of skiing, outdoor hot tubs and a whole lot more.

Schools near Fairmont include Martin Morigeau Elementary School (k-7) in nearby Canal Flats and Windermere Elementary School and Mountain Ridge Academy in Windermere. Students in the area are usually bused to school.
