Edgewater was established as a farming community before the start of World War I. During the 1900s, Jim McKay, a young scot, arrived in the area to pack in supplies for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Later, others followed him and transformed the area into a mining, forestry and farming settlement. Many of the residents were from England, and after the war, most of them went back home. This caused Edgewater's population to decline, but as of today the area's population has recovered and Edgewater is thriving as a tourist destination and agricultural area. The name Edgewater comes from the area's location, which is at the edge of the waters of the Columbia River.
