Edgewater History

Edgewater was established as a farming community before the start of World War I. During the 1900s, Jim McKay, a young scot, arrived in the area to pack in supplies for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Later, others followed him and transformed the area into a mining, forestry and farming settlement. Many of the residents were from England, and after the war, most of them went back home. This caused Edgewater's population to decline, but as of today the area's population has recovered and Edgewater is thriving as a tourist destination and agricultural area. The name Edgewater comes from the area's location, which is at the edge of the waters of the Columbia River.

Parks

Kootenay Park is situated to the east of Edgewater via Highway 93. The park offers beautiful sceneries, a variety of wildlife, campgrounds, hot springs, and waterfalls and a whole lot more. It also features some of the best hiking trails in the area which allow you to experience the breathtaking views of the landscape and mountain peaks. They include Floe Lake/Hawke Creek Trail and the Stanley Glacier Trail. Mountain climbers are a few minutes away from Bugaboo Provincial Park, situated in the Purcell Mountains to the northwest. The area offers challenging climbing with breathtaking views of the landscape. Notably, Howser Spire and Bugaboo Spire are the most popular climbing areas, but it may help to note it's an expert-level climb, so be adequately prepared.

Another park worth visiting is the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy Provincial Park and Protected Area situated to the southwest. It features a protected area spanning 34,947 hectares of secluded wilderness with no road access or helicopter access. It offers visitors a chance to enjoy over 130 km of trails, horse riding, waterfalls, hiking, skiing and mountain climbing.

Golf

Edgewater Hilltop Par 3 golf course is a public golf course with a well-maintained course. It's a great place to train your kids to play golf as the course is quite easy and their shop also serves the best homemade pie. Spur Valley Golf Resort is situated a few minutes north of Edgewater and features a 9-hole course. More courses are available in nearby Radium Hot Springs including, 9-hole Setetkwa Golf Course, 18-hole Springs at Radium Golf Resort and 18-hole Radium Course.

Arts and Culture

On Saturdays during the summer months, Edgewater hosts the Edgewater Market, where residents of Columbia Valley and tourists from all over Canada come to buy local fresh produce, crafts, arts and much more. The community also holds an annual Steamboat Mountain Festival, which takes place every July. The event draws people from all over the country and features great music from many musicians. In early spring, there's also the Gathering of the Greens, an event that brings people together to enjoy great food and fantastic local music.

Edgewater Schools

Edgewater Elementary School is the only school in the area. Other nearby schools are in Invermere, which is a few minutes away. These include David Thompson Secondary School, Eileen Madson Primary School, and J A Laird Elementary School. Children are usually bused to school. For higher education, the College Of The Rockies Invermere Campus is also nearby.
