Canal Flats History

Canal Flats was originally named McGillivray's Portage by David Thompson, who visited the area in 1808. However, the name Canal Flats comes from the remains of a canal (completed in 1889) built to connect Columbia Lake with the nearby Kootenay River. The canal ended up being narrow and too dangerous, and it was eventually destroyed in 1902. The area's post office was named Canal Flats in 1913, and the village ended up taking up that name.

Fishing

The Columbia Valley offers many opportunities for fishing, swimming, boating and exploration. The nearby Columbia Lake offers fishing opportunities with an abundance of fish such as mountain whitefish, kokanee, rainbow trout, bull trout, burbot, and cutthroat trout. Columbia Lake Provincial Park, located on the eastern shores of the lake, offers a stunning landscape, lake views, hiking trails and spectacular mountain views. Another great park is Tilley Memorial Park, located at the southeastern corner of the lake. It features a boat ramp, picnic tables and a beautiful beach area. Several parks great for camping and outdoor exploration are situated within a few minutes of Canal Flats. These include Top of the World Provincial Park and Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park.

More fishing is available in Whiteswan Lake and Alces Lake, located within Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park. The lakes have an abundance of Rainbow trout, which are annually replenished with a release of 30,000 fingerlings. While exploring Whiteswan, you can also head on to the Lussier Hot Springs, which features pools with a comfortable temperature. Other fishing water bodies include Kootenay River, Finley River and Whitetail Lake.

Golf

Golf enthusiasts in Canal Flats enjoy proximity to many golf courses. In Fairmont, Riverside Golf Course, Coys Par 3 Golf Course and Mountainside Golf Course feature well-maintained and challenging courses. Other golf courses are a few minutes away in Windermere and Invermere. These include Copper Point, Eagle Ranch, and Windermere Valley Golf Course.

Trails

There are many trails in the Columbia River Valley, but the most famous is The Source of the Columbia Trail. The 1.5 km trail offers an opportunity to observe wildlife and interact with nature. The trail ends at the source of the Columbia River (the 4th largest river system in North America), where you can observe the water bubbling from the ground.

Amenities & Festivals

Other Canal Flats amenities include Canal Flats Arena, a community arena used for hockey, skating and private events; Canal Flats Civic Centre which hosts community events such as Bingo, Community Christmas Party, Halloween Family Dance, and Canal Days (an event that features a talent show, parades, pancake breakfast, beer garden, raffles, and selection of Canal Flats Citizen of the Year); ball field, soccer pitch, and bike park.
